Why your breaker keeps tripping, and what it is telling you
A tripping breaker is not a fault in the breaker. It is a report, and it is worth reading.

Almost nobody calls an electrician about a breaker the first time it trips. They walk to the panel, push the handle back, and get on with the evening. That is reasonable. A breaker exists to interrupt a circuit before the wiring behind it gets hot, and a single trip on a hot August afternoon in Amarillo, with a window unit and a microwave sharing a circuit, is the device doing exactly what it was installed to do.
It gets interesting the second and third time. A breaker that trips repeatedly is not faulty and it is not being dramatic. It is reporting the same condition over and over because the condition has not changed. The useful question is which of a small number of conditions it is.
What the breaker is actually measuring
A standard breaker watches for two things. The first is current over time, which is how it catches an overload: too much load on one circuit for too long. The second is a short, where current finds a path it was never meant to take and rises almost instantly. A ground fault breaker or outlet adds a third job, watching for current leaking to earth, which is the condition that matters around water. Each of those trips feels identical at the panel, and they mean very different things.
Three causes, in the order you should suspect them
- Overload. The circuit is being asked to carry more than it was designed for. This is the most common cause by a wide margin, it usually trips after a delay rather than instantly, and it often tracks with a habit: the same appliance, the same time of day, the same room.
- A failing appliance. Motors are the usual suspects, because a motor that is wearing out draws more current than it used to. Freezers, well pumps, garage door openers and older window units all show up here.
- A fault in the wiring or a device. A short or a damaged conductor trips instantly and repeatedly, with no relationship to what is switched on. This is the one that stops being a nuisance and starts being a reason to call.
The test you can do yourself
Unplug everything on the circuit. Everything, not the things you think are relevant. Reset the breaker. If it holds, plug items back in one at a time, waiting a few minutes between each, and use the room normally in between. Most people find their answer here, and it is usually an appliance rather than the house.
If the breaker trips with the circuit completely empty, stop. That result has ruled out everything you can rule out from the living room, and what is left is in the wiring or in the panel.
When resetting it is no longer the right move
There is a point where a tripping breaker changes from an inconvenience into a reason to leave it off and pick up the phone. Treat any of the following as that point:
- The breaker is warm, or the panel is warm to the touch.
- You can smell anything burning, hot plastic included, however faintly.
- There is buzzing, crackling or any visible arcing at an outlet, a switch or the panel itself.
- An outlet or switch plate is discoloured, scorched or soft.
- The breaker trips instantly, every time, with nothing plugged in.
- It will not reset at all, or it resets and drops again within seconds.
Repeatedly resetting a breaker against a real fault removes the protection and leaves the fault. That is the wrong way round, and it is worth being blunt about.
What an electrician looks at when they get there
The work usually starts at the panel, because the panel says a lot about the house. How the circuits are shared, whether the breakers match the conductors behind them, whether earlier additions were done well, and whether anything is showing heat. In an older Amarillo house that has been added to over decades, the answer is often that a circuit is now carrying rooms it was never sized for, which is a real fix rather than a reset.
The one thing worth writing down before you call is the pattern. Which breaker, how often, what was running, and whether it trips instantly or after a while. That is genuinely useful information, and it shortens the visit.
