How a standby generator actually gets sized

Most standby generator conversations start in the wrong place. Someone has seen a number, a kilowatt rating on a spec sheet or a figure a neighbour quoted, and the question arrives as whether that number is enough. It is a fair question and it cannot be answered yet, because nobody has said what the generator is for.

Start with what has to stay on

Standby power is a choice about priorities. Very few properties back up everything, and most do not need to. The first job is a list, in order, of what genuinely has to keep running when the grid does not.

For a house that is often a shortlist: heating and cooling, the refrigerator and freezer, well or water pressure, some lighting, and whatever medical or work equipment the household depends on. For a business the list is about trading: refrigeration, tills and card processing, security and lighting, and anything that spoils or stops when the power does. For a farm it is usually about livestock and stored crop, which means water, ventilation and handling equipment, and those loads are neither small nor optional.

Starting current is the part people miss

Anything with a motor pulls significantly more current for the moment it starts than it does once it is running. A well pump, a compressor, a grain auger and an air conditioner all do this. A generator sized against running loads alone can be perfectly adequate on paper and still stumble every time the pump kicks in.

This is why a proper sizing conversation asks what motors are on the property and how they are controlled, rather than only how many watts the appliances add up to. Two properties with identical totals can need different machines.

The transfer switch is the real machine

The generator gets the attention, but the transfer switch is the part that makes standby power work. It is the device that disconnects the property from the utility supply and connects it to the generator, and it is what keeps generator power from flowing back out onto lines that a utility crew may be working on. That is not a detail, it is the whole safety case.

An automatic transfer switch senses the outage, starts the generator, changes over, and reverses all of that when the grid returns. That is what people mean when they say a generator came on by itself. A manual switch does the same job with someone present to operate it, costs less, and is a perfectly sensible choice for a property where somebody is always around.

A house, a shop and a farm want different things

  • A house usually cares about comfort and food, tolerates a short changeover gap, and cares a great deal about how much noise the machine makes and where it sits.
  • A business cares about trading hours and about what an outage costs per hour, which often justifies a bigger machine and an automatic switch.
  • A farm cares about livestock, water and stored crop, and its loads are motor heavy, spread across outbuildings, and seasonal. Sizing here is as much about which building the load lives in as about the total.

Siting, fuel and the things decided on the day

A standby generator needs somewhere level and drained to sit, clearance for airflow and service access, a fuel supply, and a route for the conduit back to the switchgear. Fuel choice tends to follow what the property already has. Noise and neighbours matter more than people expect, and so does prevailing wind, which in the Panhandle is worth thinking about rather than assuming.

What to have ready when you call

A short list of what must stay on, a note of any motors and roughly how big they are, a photograph of your existing panel, and a sense of whether you want the changeover to be automatic or whether someone will always be there to do it. That is enough to have a real conversation rather than a hypothetical one.
