On a light industrial site the electrical system is rarely what people picture. It is not lighting and sockets, it is motors and the gear that starts, protects and stops them. Starters, contactors, overloads and the panels they live in do an enormous amount of switching under load, and they are where a working site fails.

On a site that is running, the scheduling conversation comes before the electrical one. Which line can come out, for how long, and when. A job planned around a shutdown that was happening anyway costs a fraction of the same job planned around a convenient Tuesday.
It is not a complicated principle, but it does have to be raised early, because by the time the work is booked the cheap window has usually passed.
Chapter 03
Adding to a system rather than designing a clean one
Very little light industrial work is a blank sheet. Most of it is extending, altering or repairing something that already exists and that has been added to before, sometimes by several different hands.
That constrains the answer in useful ways. What the existing supply and distribution can actually carry, what spare capacity is genuinely there rather than nominally there, and whether the sensible move is to extend what is present or to accept that a section has reached the end of its life. Those questions get answered by looking, which is why the first visit is a survey rather than a quote.
