Chapter 01
Sizing starts with what has to stay on
Most generator conversations open with a number somebody has already seen, and it cannot be answered yet, because nobody has said what the generator is for. Standby power is a decision about priorities before it is a decision about equipment.
So the first job is a list, in order, of what genuinely has to keep running when the grid does not. In a house that is usually heating and cooling, the refrigerator and freezer, water pressure, some lighting, and whatever medical or work equipment the household depends on. In a business it is whatever stops trading or starts spoiling. On a farm it is livestock, water, ventilation and stored crop, and none of those loads are small.

Starting current is the part that catches people out
Anything with a motor draws far more current for the moment it starts than it does once it is running. Well pumps, compressors, augers and air conditioning all behave this way. A generator sized against running loads alone can look perfectly adequate on paper and still stumble every time the pump kicks in.
That is why a proper sizing conversation asks what motors are on the property and how they are controlled, rather than only adding up appliance wattages. Two properties with identical totals can genuinely need different machines.
Chapter 03
The transfer switch is the machine that matters
The generator gets the attention and the transfer switch does the work. It is the device that disconnects the property from the utility supply and connects it to the generator, and it is what stops generator power flowing back out onto lines a utility crew may be working on. That is not a detail, it is the entire safety case.
An automatic switch senses the outage, starts the machine, changes over and reverses all of it when the grid returns. That is what people mean when they say a generator came on by itself. A manual switch does the same job with somebody present to operate it, costs less, and is a sensible choice on a property where someone is always around.
A house, a shop and a farm want different machines
A house cares about comfort and food, tolerates a short changeover gap, and cares a great deal about noise and where the machine sits. A business cares about trading hours and about what an outage costs per hour, which often justifies both a larger machine and an automatic switch. A farm cares about livestock, water and stored crop, and its loads are motor heavy and spread across outbuildings, so the question is as much which building the load lives in as what the total comes to.

We service and repair generators from other manufacturers as well as the ones we supply, so an existing unit does not have to be replaced in order to be maintained. If you have inherited a machine with a property, or bought one elsewhere, it is still something we can work on.
